Sukkot 5782

The Sukkah is shaped like a hug, they say. The two-and-a-half walls corresponding to the upper arm and lower arm and hand wrapped around the beloved. Between lovers, the Hugger needs to mean something by the physical act in order to give it significance, but the Hugged doesn’t have to mean anything at all. Some experiences need to be interpreted, others just need – immersion. We swim in the sukkah; a purification pool, or a womb; we can lose our sense of self, finally, embraced on all sides by fragile leafy care. This is the other kind of kavanah – not intention, but attunement of Being. Both of these need to be exercised to approach a spiritual and social life worth living.
