Shemot 5777

Resisting Pharaoh’s populist hate-speech, two women “fear God” and save persecuted children. What is the difference between fearing and loving? To love God is to see the world as it is: teeming with life, overflowing with light and colour, plants burning with life, sparks of holiness in every face, the joy of being in the world, the joy of creating, the joy of enjoyment. To fear God is to see the world as it is: the absolute certainty of death, the absolute uncertainty of its arrival, the ridiculous shortness of our lives, the unavoidable responsibilities, the tremendous  importance of every act. Together, these two  modes of ‘seeing’ allow for the continual revelation described in the Torah and so necessary today.
